Intravenous Infusions are large volume sterile solutions of electrolytse and/or nutrients administered intravenously to meet normal fluid and electrolyte requirements or replenish substantial or continuing losses when the patient is vomitiong or nauseated and is unable to take adequate amounts by mouth.

In an individual patient, the nature and severity of the alaectrolyte imbalance must be assessed from the following.

  • The history of the patient
  • Clinical signs and symptoms
  • Biochemical examinations

The electrolyte composition of Ringer-Lactate solution for injection closely resembles that of Plasma.

This solution, apart from providing Na+ and CI-, suppliers moderate amounts of potassium and bicarbonate ions.

it is indicated in the following.

  • Mild metabolic acidosis
  • As a fluid and electrolyte replenisher in cases of degydration or shock due to diarrhoea and vomiting, peritonitis and interstitial obstruction
  • Treatment after serious burns and in cases of Ketonuria.


  • Gastric outlet obstructing
  • Use with caution in oedematous patients suffering from cardiac, renal or hepatic conditions.

Usual dosage: 500ml-1000ml

Rate of infusion: 500ml/hr.
